Cancer Prevention: What You Need to Know

Guest of the Week: Dr. Farin Kamangar, MD, PhD, MPH, MHS

Dr. Kamangar will discuss scientifically proven facts about the causes of cancer.  We will discuss what we need to do and what we should avoid to prevent or delay cancer.  He will also try and dispel some myths about cancer etiology and preventive measures.   
Dr. Kamangar is a Professor and Chairman, Department of Public Health Analysis, School of Community and Policy, Morgan State University. He is also  an adjunct faculty with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Epidemiology Branch, DCEG, NCI and with Tehran University of Medical Sciences

He obtained his PhD in Epidemiology, Hopkins, 2005, MHS in Biostatistics, Hopkins, 2005, MPH, Tehran University, 2000 and MD, Tehran University, 1996. He ranked number 1 in the National University exam (Concour saraasari) in 1987.  Dr. Kamangar has 80 peer reviewed publications, including several publications in JNCI, JCO, BMJ, Gut, CEBP, CPR, BJC, IJE, IJC. He has received 17 professional awards, including Alpha Chapter of Delta Omega, NIH Merit Award (Group Award), NCI Director’s Innovation Award and DCEG Intramural Research Awards.  He is  the Director, Title III funds, School of Community Health, Morgan State University, Director, Statistical Analysis of Medical Board Exams, Ministry of Health, Iran, Director, Students’ Scientific Research Center, Tehran University. He has been Associate editor for AJE and Editorial board member for three other journals. Dr. Kamangar has reviewed for 45 journals, including Lancet, JNCI, JCO, Gastroenterology, Gut; has taught 80 courses or workshops in epidemiology, biostatistics, or research methods at Morgan State University, Hopkins, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences . His 30 invited talks include those at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Harvard School of Public Health and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.  Dr. Kamangar has had interviews with Voice of America, Reuters, and other news agencies. He co-organized several meetings, including the Barrett’s Esophagus and Esophageal Cancer Consortium (BEACON) meeting in Rockville.
